How to Relet Your Apartment at UMD - Rambler College Park

Plans change, and when they do, having a 12-month lease at Rambler College Park can feel stressful, especially if you’re unsure how to get out of it without extra hassle.

Fortunately, our team has helped hundreds of residents successfully relet their apartments, making the process simple and manageable.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how reletting works at Rambler College Park, including the steps to take, what’s expected of you and any fees you should be prepared for.

1. Find a Reletter

University of Maryland students share a laptop and notebook on-campus in College Park.

If you’re looking to relet your spot at Rambler College Park, it’s up to you to find someone to take over your lease.

Think of it kind of like finding a roommate: you want someone reliable who will pay rent on time and vibe well with your current roommates. A great place to start is with people you already know, like friends, classmates, group chats or people from your clubs.

If that doesn’t work out, try posting in UMD housing groups or College Park Facebook pages. There are always students looking for short-term housing for summer classes, internships or research. so the earlier you start looking, the better your chances of finding someone quickly.

2. Notify Management

To get started, email the leasing team and CC the person taking over your apartment so they can confirm they’re stepping in.

Once they’re looped in, they’ll need to complete the standard leasing process, including submitting an application and signing their own lease.

We recommend keeping everyone on the same email thread to help avoid confusion and ensure the correct monthly rent is clearly reflected in their lease.

3. Reletter Application and Lease

After you find someone to take over your lease, they’ll need to fill out the Rambler College Park application. We’ve formatted it to be quick and easy, usually taking only about 15 to 30 minutes.

They’ll be asked for some basic info like their ID, emergency contact, where they currently live and about any pet details if they have one. They’ll also need to pass a background and credit check.

Once they’re approved, they’ll sign their lease. To do that, they’ll either need a guarantor (like a parent/guardian) or qualify on their own, plus have renter’sinsurance set up.

As part of the process, your reletter will need to pay an application fee, administrative fee and security deposit. You can check the exact costs on our FAQ page.

Once they’ve submitted everything, applications are typically processed within 3–5 business days.

Keep in mind: if your reletter doesn’t complete all required steps, they won’t be able to take over your lease, so it’s best to start early to avoid any delays.

4. Pay your Reletting/Administrative Fees

After your reletter is approved, you’ll be responsible for a $350 administrative fee.

Before we can send your relet agreement, all outstanding balances and fees must be paid in full.

If you’d rather have us find someone to take over your lease, you can choose our reletting service for a fee equal to 85% of one month’s rent. For example, if your rent is $1,469, that fee would be $1,248.65 and covers marketing your unit and handling the process for you.

No matter which route you choose, our leasing team will be there to guide you through each step to keep the process smooth and stress-free.

5. Relet Agreement

A University of Maryland student reads in a library on campus in College Park.

After completing the steps above, both you and your reletter must sign a relet agreement, which will outline the specific terms of the relet.

If either party fails to complete the relet agreement, it will not be approved, and you’ll remain responsible for the full lease term.

6. Finalize the Details

Once your reletter is approved and your move-out date arrives, return all keys and access devices to the leasing office. From there, the team will issue new keys to your reletter.

If anything isn’t returned, replacement fees will apply:

  • $100 for a key fob
  • $100 for a parking sticker
  • $25 for a bedroom or mailbox key

After everything is completed, you’ll officially be released from your lease, and all responsibilities will transfer to your reletter.

Plans change, and at Rambler, we get that. That’s why we make it as simple as possible to relet your apartment and move on without the stress.

Got questions or need help? Reach out to our leasing team anytime—we’re here to help you with all of your College Park housing needs.
