How UMD Meal Plans Work

UMD’s dining system runs on a “swipe” model, designed to give students flexibility and variety. Each plan includes a certain number of meal swipes for dining halls, plus Dining Dollars for on-campus cafés and food courts. Swipes reset each week, and Dining Dollars can roll over from fall to spring.
Meal plans are managed through your UMD OneCard, so you can tap and go across multiple dining locations.
Students living in traditional on-campus housing must have a resident dining plan. The minimum requirement is the Base Dining Plan.
UMD Meal Plan Payment Options
Dining Dollars

Dining Dollars are included with most meal plans and can be used at UMD’s on-campus cafés, convenience stores and select food vendors. Simply swipe your UMD ID Card at checkout, and the cost is deducted from your Dining Dollars balance. Unused Dining Dollars from the fall semester roll over to spring, but they expire at the end of the academic year.
You can use Dining Dollars at locations such as The Maryland Dairy, Qdoba, Chick-fil-A, Subway and North and South campus 24/7 Markets.
Terrapin Express

Terrapin Express functions like a prepaid debit account that can be used as pretty much the same as dining dollars, the only difference is that they do not expire. You can load funds onto your account and use them at printing stations, stores and cafes around campus.
Unlike Dining Dollars, Terrapin Express funds never expire as long as you’re enrolled and you can easily manage or reload your balance online through your student portal.
Resident Meal Plans (For On-Campus Students)
Resident Meal Plans are available to students living in university residence halls. These plans are designed for convenience and unlimited access to campus dining halls.

All Access Anytime Plan

This plan offers unlimited entry to UMD’s three dining halls 251 North, Yahentimitsi and South Campus Dining Hall. You can eat as many times per day as you want, and swipes reset weekly.
Each plan also comes with Dining Dollars to use at retail locations on campus and guest passes for visitors.
Best For: First-year students or anyone living in traditional residence halls who eat most meals on campus.
Connector Dining Plans
Block Meal Plans are a great choice for off-campus students who want the ability to dine on campus without committing to unlimited dining. These plans provide a preset number of meals per semester. Meals can be used at any of the dining halls, giving students the freedom to choose when and where they eat.
Fall to Spring Roll Over: Unused meals on your Block Plan will roll over from the Fall to the Spring semester, and all unused meals expire when dining halls close at the end of Spring Semester Finals Week.
Best For: Students who want dining hall access without committing to a full unlimited plan.
Commuter & Apartment Meal Plans
If you live off campus in an apartment like Rambler College Park or elsewhere in College Park you’re not required to have a UMD meal plan, but there are still great options if you want occasional dining hall access.
Terrapin Express Only (No Meal Swipes)
Some students skip traditional meal plans entirely and rely solely on Terrapin Express for on-demand purchases at dining halls, cafés and convenience stores. This is the most flexible option and lets you pay as you go, ideal for students who prefer to manage their own budget or cook at home.
Where You Can Use Your Meal Plan

- Dining Halls: 251 North, Yahentimitsi, South Campus Dining Hall
- Food Courts: Stamp Student Union: Subway, Panera, Chic fil a, Qdoba, Hibachi San
- On-Campus Markets: North Campus Market, South Campus Market, Footnotes Cafe, ESJ Cafe, Rudy’s Cafe
How to Choose the Right Meal Plan

Ask yourself how often you’ll eat on campus versus at home, whether you prefer full meals or grab-and-go options and what your schedule looks like – especially if you have long days on campus. Also consider your budget and how much flexibility you want, along with whether you plan to cook regularly or would rather have maximum convenience.
Freshmen will start with an unlimited plan, but many upperclassmen find commuter plans fit better once they move off campus.
Alternatives to a Meal Plan

If you’re living off campus, you might not need a full meal plan, since many students choose other options like cooking at home, especially with Rambler College Park offering full kitchens with modern appliances and plenty of space for meal prep. Grocery delivery is another option, with nearby options such as Lidl, Target and Amazon Fresh. When you do want to eat out, College Park has plenty of great local spots like Bandit Taco, Wonder, Marathon Deli, The Hall CP and Board & Brew, all within minutes of Rambler.
