Is it Possible for First-Year Students at UMD to Live Off-Campus?

Yes, it is possible for first-year students to live off campus during their first year at the University of Maryland. Some programs such as honors are required to live in a specific residence hall, but there are ways to get exempt from this; you can get in contact with UMD Housing to discuss these different considerations.

If you qualify for an exemption or are planning for your future academic career, you have the flexibility to explore the numerous student housing options off-campus that are available at the University of Maryland.

Where Do Students Live if They Do Not Live On Campus?

Before tackling the list of reasons why freshmen may want to live off campus, it is important to take a look at popular areas around College Park. For a more detailed guide of housing options near UMD, check out our article on Where to Live Near UMD: The Most Popular Neighborhoods in College Park for Student Living.

Downtown College Park

Located a short distance from UMD’s south side of campus, Downtown College Park is a lively area that is surrounded by restaurants, student apartments within walking distance to UMD campus which makes it a top choice for those prioritizing convenience and proximity to classes.

Renting a house in this area is also a common practice among UMD students, though the process can be a bit more complicated as they aren’t specifically designed for student living. If you’re okay with being slightly farther from the center of campus, neighborhoods like Old Town can be a budget friendly option as you have more roommates to split the costs.

South Campus

Just south of the University of Maryland’s main campus, you’ll find a mix of student focused and traditional apartment options. This area offers convenient distance from major campus spots like SECU Stadium and Eppley Recreation Center. It is a great choice for Terps who want to stay close to classes, study spaces and campus events.

While some apartments are priced slightly higher due to convenience, students choose this area or the strong community feel with many off campus student apartments nearby.

North Campus

North of the University of Maryland campus, you’ll find a mix of apartments that offer a quieter residential feel. These neighborhoods are often popular with students who have STEM centered classes that are just steps away from their academic buildings.

Leasing an apartment in this area is a great option if you don’t mind being slightly further from the bustling social atmosphere, but still want convenient access to walking trails and nearby amenities. It’s ideal for students who prefer a more relaxed environment while staying connected to campus life.

Before choosing where to live, it’s important to consider where your classes, labs and student involvement activities are located on campus so you can pick a spot that makes your daily routine a breeze!

1. Cook Your Own Meals

While dorms at the University of Maryland offer access to shared kitchens, they’re typically communal and shared by an entire floor, which makes the idea of cooking less convenient. Additionally, they lack all the appliances necessary to make cooking a fun activity. Off-campus apartments, however, they usually come with full kitchens. This means that you can cook on your own schedule, no waiting for an open microwave or space. Whether you’re meal prepping for the week, stocking your own fridge or hosting dinner with friends, you’ll have more flexibility and control over what and when you eat.

2. Enjoy Your Own Space

Living in UMD residence halls often means sharing a bedroom and communal bathrooms. Off-campus apartments provide more privacy, with options for your own bedroom and sometimes even your own bathroom. That extra personal space can make a big difference when it comes to studying or recharging after a long day on campus. Many off-campus communities also offer larger beds, more storage and fully furnished living rooms, giving you more of a home-away-from-home feel.

3. Stay All Year Round

If you plan to stay in College Park over the summer for classes, internships or a job, off-campus housing offers the convenience of 12 month leases. Unlike some residence halls that close during breaks, most off-campus apartments allow you to live there year round. This is especially helpful for out-of-state or international Terps who need consistent housing through the year.

4. Access to Amenities

Off-campus student apartments near UMD often include amenities that reach far beyond what traditional forms offer. From on site fitness centers and study lounges to pools and social spaces, everything you need is just steps away from your door. Some communities near campus even offer upgraded gyms, rooftop lounges and collaborative workspaces designed to support both academics and social life. Having these amenities in your building can make balancing classes, workouts and down time much easier, especially during your first year while you are acclimating.

5. Pet-Friendly Living

Missing your pet from home? Most UMD residence halls don’t allow pets, but many off-campus apartments in College Park are pet-friendly. If you’re hoping to bring a furry companion with you, or adopt one during your time at Maryland, off-campus living gives you that option. Being able to have your pet with you can make the transition to college life feel a lot easier and more comfortable.

Whether you’re looking for more privacy, better amenities or the flexibility to stay in College Park year-round, off-campus living provides you with plenty of advantages as a first year Terp.
