Finding the right roommate can be one of the most important parts of your college experience at the University of Maryland, but it can also feel stressful if you’re not sure where to start. Whether you’re moving to College Park for the first time or looking for a new living situation, the person you live with can have a big impact on your daily routine and overall experience.
At Rambler, we work with students every year who are searching for roommates and navigating off-campus housing near UMD. Through that experience, we understand what students should consider when deciding who to live with.
In this guide, we’ll walk through helpful tips for finding a roommate at UMD so you can feel confident choosing someone who fits your lifestyle and living preferences.

Step 1: Know Your Must-Haves
Before you start looking for a roommate, take some time to figure out what matters most to you in a housing situation. Knowing your non-negotiables early can make the roommate search much easier.
Start by thinking through a few basic questions:
- What’s my realistic monthly budget?
- Do I want to live on campus or off campus?
- How many roommates am I comfortable sharing a space with?
Once you have those basics figured out, you can start getting more specific. If you already know where you’d like to live, consider whether you have a particular apartment community, neighborhood, or dorm in mind.
These questions are simply a starting point, but they can help you narrow down your options and better understand what type of living situation will work best for you.

Step 2: Ask Around

If you need a roommate, definitely seek out opportunities! Even if your friends have roommates, they could know of other individuals that are still looking. Rooming with a friend of a friend is almost a guaranteed way to have a comfortable living situation and gives you the ability to meet up with them beforehand to meet them.
Another alternative to asking friends is to ask student organizations. If you’re in an organization on campus, you can send a message through GroupMe to let people know you’re looking for roommates. This can help especially if you enjoy the organization as there are likely people who have similar values as you.
While having a mutual friend or an organization doesn’t guarantee a good fit for a roommate, asking your network and using your resources is never a bad option.
Step 3: Utilize Your Resources

At UMD, you can find a roommate through several different channels, depending on whether you’re living on-campus or off-campus.
Facebook groups are an amazing way to search to find specific kinds of roommates. There are different groups for freshmen, transfer students, people in the same majors and more.
Instagram is also a sufficient resource for incoming freshmen, as there are specific pages where individuals can submit photos, including a little blurb about who they are.
Once people post Instagram photos announcing they’ll be attending UMD, then students will DM each other to reach out to be friends or roommates. There are also specific pages where incoming students submit a photo or short bio to introduce themselves to fellow freshman, like @umd2030co or @umd2030bios.
There are also numerous student-specific roommate searching websites. For on-campus housing, The UMD Housing Portal includes a lifestyle questionnaire that helps match you with compatible roommates. For off-campus housing: students can also utilize the UMD Off-Campus Housing Database to browse listings and find people searching for roommates.
Step 4: Make Sure It’s a Good Fit

One of the most important parts of finding the right roommate is making sure your lifestyles and daily routines line up. You do not have to be exactly the same, but having similar habits can make living together much easier.
Take time to learn about the other person’s day-to-day routine. What time do they usually wake up and go to bed? How often do they clean their space? Do they enjoy having friends over, or do they prefer a quieter environment?
If you are not sure where to start, using a roommate questionnaire can help guide the conversation. Asking thoughtful questions about habits, schedules, and expectations can make it easier to understand whether you would be a good fit.
Talking through these details early helps set clear expectations for both roommates. When you are on the same page about things like cleanliness, guests, quiet hours, and shared spaces, it becomes much easier to avoid misunderstandings later on.
Living with the right roommate can make a big difference in your overall college experience. When communication is clear and lifestyles align, sharing a space can lead to better sleep, smoother routines, and a more enjoyable time both at home and on campus.
If All Else Fails…
Random roommate matching is always an option.
Many student apartments and residence halls offer roommate matching programs. When you apply, you’ll typically complete a short questionnaire about your living habits and preferences, such as your sleep schedule, cleanliness, study routines, and how you feel about having guests. Based on those responses, the housing team works to pair you with someone who has similar living preferences.
You may hear both positive and negative stories about random roommates, but it can be a great option if you don’t already have someone in mind. Many students end up meeting good friends through the roommate matching process.
At Rambler, we know how important roommates can be to your overall college experience and how much thought goes into choosing the right person to live with. We hope this guide has helped you better understand how to approach the roommate search at UMD.
